ISTANBUL: An ancient shipwreck dating back approximately 4,700 years has been discovered off the coast of Turkey, offering a rare glimpse into maritime trade and transportation during the era of the Egyptian pyramids.

The remarkable discovery has drawn attention not only because of the ship’s extraordinary age but also because of the ancient cargo preserved beneath the sea for thousands of years.

According to researchers, more than 30 ancient earthenware vessels and stone anchors have been recovered from the seabed. Although the wooden structure of the vessel has not survived, its remaining cargo provides valuable clues about trade networks and maritime activities in the ancient world.

Experts believe that the vessels may have originated from the Jordan Valley in the Middle East, suggesting that goods were transported across different regions through established sea routes thousands of years ago.

The shipwreck is believed to date back to the same period when the Great Pyramids of Egypt were being constructed, making it a significant discovery for understanding ancient civilisations and their trading connections.

While the surviving artefacts have offered valuable insights into the vessel’s possible origins and cargo, the exact circumstances surrounding its sinking remain unclear.

Researchers are expected to study the recovered artefacts further to establish more details about the ship, its journey and the maritime trade networks that existed approximately 4,700 years ago.
