Rawalpindi: A surge in dengue fever cases has been reported in Rawalpindi, with 130 new infections confirmed in the last 24 hours.
According to data released by the health authority on Friday, a total of 1,740 dengue patients have been diagnosed since January 2024.
Hospital bed occupancy has also increased, with 56 new patients admitted in a single day, bringing the total number of hospitalized cases to 281.
The majority of new cases were reported from Potohar Town Peri-Urban areas, which accounted for 88 infections in the last 24 hours.
The Municipal Corporation reported 15 cases, while 12 cases were confirmed in Rawalpindi Cantonment areas. Chak Jalal Din, a locality in Pothohar Town, remains a hotspot for dengue, with a significant number of patients emerging from the area since the outbreak began earlier this year.
In response, the health authority has ramped up its surveillance, detection, and awareness campaigns. Collaborative efforts are underway, with multiple local administrations working together to tackle the growing dengue challenge.
The Rawalpindi Waste Management Company conducted an awareness walk, distributing pamphlets with preventive messages to residents.
Meanwhile, the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board has intensified its fogging and spraying operations, with officials and field workers enforcing dengue prevention standard operating procedures (SOPs).
In addition, private schools have taken proactive steps to raise awareness. On Friday, students from various schools engaged with local shopkeepers and street vendors to educate them about the causes, prevention, and treatment of dengue fever.
Yasir Rahman, Principal of AIMHS, led an awareness walk involving students and teachers through the streets of Teach Bhatta, visiting homes to spread the message. “We are doing our part by conducting both indoor and outdoor activities to combat the dengue issue,” he said, noting that the public response has been positive.
Amjad Zeb, Founding Director of Anam School, informed APP that his institution has been holding regular lectures on dengue prevention. “In addition to lectures, we organize weekly awareness walks in nearby areas to further educate the public,” he added.
Zaheer ud Din Babar, a resident of the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board, emphasized the importance of parental vigilance.
“Parents should regularly monitor domestic water sources and ensure that preventive measures are being taken,” he advised.
