New York: Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will celebrate what he has called the “inauguration of a new era” on January 1, with a major public ceremony expected to draw tens of thousands of New Yorkers to downtown Manhattan.

The large-scale gathering, being planned as part of the mayoral transition, will take place on the steps of City Hall and is expected to lead to the temporary closure of parts of Broadway for the event.

Mamdani, described by supporters as a “breath of fresh air” in city politics, will become the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the youngest person in more than a century to lead the nation’s largest city, home to nearly eight million residents.

The mayor-elect’s transition team confirmed that extensive preparations are underway to accommodate the massive turnout anticipated for the ceremony.

The American-Pakistani political group, headed by Dr. Ijaz Ahmad, has contributed $300,000 to help finance Mamdani’s transition expenses, according to sources involved in the process.

“This inauguration is a celebration of the movement we built, the mandate we won, and the city we are prepared to lead,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Working New Yorkers are at the heart of our agenda, and we invite them to join us as we welcome this new era of politics to City Hall.”

The mayor-elect has extended an open invitation to “tens of thousands” of New Yorkers to attend the traditional swearing-in ceremony, which is expected to be one of the largest inaugural gatherings in recent city history.
