California: A devastating wildfire swept through Malibu on Tuesday, destroying at least seven homes in one of California’s most exclusive neighborhoods and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate

The fire, which exploded late Monday, was intensified by powerful winds and dry brush, threatening multimillion-dollar properties, including those owned by Hollywood celebrities.

As the fire rapidly advanced, firefighters struggled to control the blaze in the steep canyons surrounding the area.

Flames engulfed hillsides, sending choking smoke into the air. Resident Alec Gellis described the terrifying scene: “It was like 11 pm. We hear people screaming. I walk outside — the sky is bright red within an hour, we’re fully surrounded, houses burning down on one side.”

Authorities issued evacuation orders for approximately 20,000 residents, with more on standby in case conditions worsened. “Fire can be extremely unpredictable, and we highly encourage residents to be prepared,” said Captain Jennifer Seeto of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Law enforcement officers conducted door-to-door evacuations as the flames spread rapidly. Malibu’s Mayor, Doug Stewart, described the fire as “traumatic” but emphasized the resilience of the community. “It burns, it comes back, and we’re resilient and strong.”

Among those affected, actor Dick Van Dyke, who is set to celebrate his 99th birthday on Friday, confirmed he and his wife had evacuated with their animals, though they were unable to locate one of their cats. “We’re praying he’ll be OK,” Van Dyke shared on Facebook.
