What We Know About the UK Train Stabbings

Huntingdon: UK police were on Sunday investigating a mass stabbing on a London-bound train that left several passengers injured. Two British nationals have been arrested, with police saying there is no suggestion of terrorism as the motive “at this stage.”
The Incident
Police were alerted to an emergency onboard a train traveling between Doncaster in northeast England and London’s King’s Cross Station—a typically busy route—around 7:40 pm (1940 GMT) on Saturday night.
The train was stopped at Huntingdon Station in Cambridgeshire, where armed officers, police cars, ambulances, and two air ambulances quickly swarmed the area.
“Police boarded the train and arrested two people within eight minutes of the first 999 call,”
said Superintendent John Loveless from the British Transport Police.
While 10 people were initially taken to hospital, four were later discharged. Two passengers remained in life-threatening condition on Sunday morning.
What Witnesses Saw
Passengers described scenes of chaos and horror as a man with a large knife attacked people onboard.
Witness Olly Foster told the BBC that he heard people shouting,
“Run, run, there’s a guy literally stabbing everyone,”
initially thinking it was a Halloween prank.
As panic spread, passengers pushed through the carriage. Foster said his hand was “covered in blood” from a chair he had leaned on.
He also described seeing an older man bravely block the assailant from attacking a young girl, saying the ordeal “felt like forever,” though it lasted only minutes.
Another witness told The Times there was “blood everywhere” as people hid in washrooms. Others told Sky News they saw a man holding a large knife on the platform after the train stopped—before he was tasered and restrained by police.
Those Arrested
Police arrested two British nationals on suspicion of attempted murder at the scene.
The suspects, both held in custody, were identified as:
A 32-year-old man, a Black British national.
A 35-year-old man, a British national of Caribbean descent.
Superintendent Loveless confirmed,
“At this stage, there is nothing to suggest this is a terrorist incident.”
Police are still investigating the motive behind the attack.
Huntingdon Station remained closed and cordoned off on Sunday. The train, now a crime scene, stood idle at the platform as forensic teams continued their work.
Official Responses
Both police and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that the suspects were born in the UK, countering social media speculation fueled by rising anti-immigration sentiment.
Recent attacks have been followed by misinformation online, with false claims about perpetrators being immigrants or asylum seekers.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “appalling” and “deeply concerning.”
King Charles III and Queen Camilla said they were “truly appalled and shocked.”
London North Eastern Railway (LNER), which operates along the route, urged passengers not to travel on Sunday due to disruptions, warning of cancellations at short notice.
“Passengers will see a high visibility presence of police officers at stations and on trains throughout today,” said Loveless.
Authorities announced a “surge” in police presence at major rail terminals including London, Manchester, and Huntingdon in the coming days.
Knife Crime in the UK
Knife crime in England and Wales has been rising since 2011, according to government data.
While Britain enforces some of the strictest gun laws in the world, knife-related violence has been branded a “national crisis” by Prime Minister Starmer.
His Labour government has pledged to crack down on knife possession and strengthen prevention programs.
In the past year, several high-profile stabbings have shaken the nation:
July 2024: Three girls were murdered at a dance class in Southport, one of the country’s worst mass stabbings in years.
October 2024: Two people were killed—one by misdirected police gunfire—in a stabbing spree at a Manchester synagogue.
October 2024 (London): A man was charged with murder after a broad daylight attack that left one dead and two injured.
