Water Shortage Paralyzes Peshawar’s Khyber Super Market Area

Peshawar: For the third consecutive week, residents of Khyber Super Market in Peshawar Cantonment have been struggling with a crippling water shortage that has brought daily life to a near standstill for thousands of people living and working in the area.
The bustling locality, home to nearly 100 plazas comprising residential apartments, offices and commercial outlets, has been hit hard by the prolonged disruption. Students, families and office workers say the absence of a reliable water supply has turned routine activities into daily challenges.
According to residents, the crisis began after underground pipelines supplying water from the area’s tube well were damaged during excavation work for a plaza currently under construction by the Cantonment Board. Despite repeated complaints to the relevant authorities, the damaged pipelines have yet to be properly repaired.
The situation has been further aggravated by frequent electricity outages following the relocation of transformers in the area. These power shutdowns have rendered the tube well non-operational for long periods, sharply reducing water availability across the locality.

Until recently, residents received water for nearly three hours a day. That supply has now been reduced to barely one hour — and even that is irregular. In many multi-storey buildings, the limited supply fails to reach rooftop storage tanks, leaving households without water for drinking, bathing or basic household needs.
Residents describe growing frustration and distress as they are forced to rely on water tankers or make alternative arrangements, often at considerable expense. Many say the prolonged crisis has disrupted work routines, affected hygiene and placed an additional burden on families already coping with rising living costs.
The affected community has appealed to the Cantonment Board and concerned authorities to take immediate notice of the worsening situation. They are calling for urgent repair of the damaged pipelines, restoration of uninterrupted electricity supply to the tube well and a permanent solution to prevent similar crises in the future.
Residents warn that if the issue continues to be ignored, public frustration may intensify, further escalating the situation in one of Peshawar Cantonment’s busiest commercial and residential hubs.
