Two Killed in Bajaur Attack on Polio Team

News Desk

Bajaur: At least two people, including a polio worker and a police officer, were killed in a firing incident in the Bajaur district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday.

According to rescue sources, unknown assailants opened fire on a polio vaccination team that was administering drops to children in the area.

The attack occurred while the polio team was conducting a door-to-door vaccination campaign. A police officer providing security for the team was also shot and killed. Both victims died at the scene.

Following the incident, security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to apprehend the attackers. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but such assaults are often attributed to militant groups opposed to the polio vaccination drive, which they wrongly believe to be a cover for espionage or a cause of health problems.

The polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan has faced significant challenges due to misinformation and resistance from extremist elements. Despite these obstacles, health authorities continue their efforts to eradicate the disease, which still lingers in parts of the country.

Investigations are ongoing as police seek to track down the perpetrators responsible for this latest attack on healthcare workers.
