Trump Stands by Pick to Head Pentagon Despite Accusations

Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for Pete Hegseth as his nominee to head the Pentagon, despite multiple reports accusing the former military officer and Fox News presenter of sexual aggression and excessive drinking.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump described Hegseth as “a WINNER,” insisting that “there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!”
In excerpts from an upcoming NBC News interview, Trump reiterated his confidence in Hegseth, emphasizing his military dedication.
Senate Resistance
Hegseth faces significant opposition in the Senate, with six Republican senators reportedly against his nomination—enough to block his confirmation in the 53-47 Republican-majority chamber.
Hegseth has been actively lobbying senators to garner support, stating, “We’re going to earn those votes.”
Controversies Surrounding Hegseth
Accusations of sexual aggression surfaced following a 2017 incident in California, although no formal complaint was filed.
The New York Times reported an email from Hegseth’s mother in 2018, accusing him of being “an abuser of women” and questioning his character. She later recanted, citing emotional strain during his divorce.
Additional allegations from The New Yorker include sexual misconduct, excessive drinking, and financial mismanagement, leading to Hegseth’s resignation from veterans’ organizations.
Trump’s Response to Allegations
Trump dismissed concerns over Hegseth’s past drinking behavior, asserting that those who know him well deny any drinking problem.
Trump has already faced the withdrawal of one nominee, Matt Gaetz, for US attorney general amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Hegseth’s Stance
Hegseth has denied engaging in any non-consensual relationships and thanked Trump for his continued support, stating on X: “Like you, we will never back down.”
The nomination remains contentious, with the spotlight on Hegseth’s lobbying efforts and the Senate’s ultimate decision.
