Dhaka: Bangladesh’s opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami were locked in a neck-and-neck battle on Thursday as early results began to emerge from a landmark national election — the first since the 2024 youth-led uprising that forced long-time prime minister Sheikh Hasina from power.

Tens of millions of voters cast their ballots in what many observers describe as the country’s most consequential election in more than a decade, seen as a test of democratic renewal after months of political turmoil.

Preliminary counting suggested a tight race between the two major opposition forces, with final results expected later in the day.

Analysts say a decisive outcome will be critical to restoring stability in the South Asian nation of 175 million people, which has been grappling with economic strain and political uncertainty since the mass protests that toppled Hasina’s government.

The 2024 uprising, largely driven by Gen Z activists and student groups, led to weeks of deadly unrest that disrupted daily life and dealt a blow to key industries — particularly the garment sector, the world’s second-largest apparel exporter and a backbone of Bangladesh’s economy.

Political observers warn that prolonged uncertainty or a disputed result could further unsettle markets and delay efforts to rebuild investor confidence.

For many voters, the election represents not only a contest for power but a turning point in shaping Bangladesh’s political future after a period of unprecedented upheaval.
