United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appealed to warring parties around the world to observe the Olympic Truce as the 2026 Winter Olympic Games opened in Italy.

In a message marking the inauguration of the Milan-Cortina Games, Guterres said that competition between nations should be limited to sports arenas, not battlefields.

“The only battle of nations that should take place is on the sports field, not on the battlefield. I call on all parties to conflicts to observe the Olympic Truce,” he said.

Describing the Olympic and Paralympic Games as a “beacon of hope,” the UN chief said the athletes’ dedication and perseverance demonstrate what humanity can achieve through unity and peace.

Earlier this month, Italian President Sergio Mattarella also called for a truce during the Olympic Games, saying the global event stands firmly against violence and war.

The opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics took place in Milan on Saturday.
