Guwahati, India: Tristan Stubbs scored an unbeaten half-century as South Africa extended their second-innings lead over India to a commanding 508, moving closer to a series win in the second Test on Tuesday.
The world Test champions lead the two-match series 1-0, and even a draw in Guwahati would secure their first series victory in India since 2000. India, still reeling from a heavy defeat in the opener in Kolkata, are fighting to avoid another damaging loss.
At the second break on day four, South Africa were 220-4, having lost just one wicket in the second session. Stubbs was unbeaten on 60, while Wiaan Mulder added 29 runs at lunch.

Play in Guwahati starts 30 minutes early due to early sunsets, with the order of intervals reversed, meaning lunch comes after tea.
Stubbs and Tony de Zorzi, who scored 49, put together a fourth-wicket stand of 101 before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed De Zorzi for his third wicket of the day.
South Africa had resumed on 26-0 after bowling India out for 201 on day three, taking a first-innings lead of 288. Left-handed opener Ryan Rickelton made 35 before falling to Jadeja’s left-arm spin, while Aiden Markram (29) and skipper Temba Bavuma (3) were also dismissed by the Indian spinners.
Stubbs and De Zorzi’s century stand further frustrated the hosts, but Jadeja finally broke through to trap De Zorzi lbw, keeping India’s hopes alive in the second innings.
