Quetta: At least six people, including a woman, were shot dead when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a house in the Buleda area of Turbat, police said on Wednesday, underscoring the fragile security situation in Balochistan.

Two others sustained injuries in the attack and were shifted along with the bodies to Turbat Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Authorities have launched an investigation, but no group has yet claimed responsibility for the assault.

The latest incident adds to a pattern of violence that has kept Balochistan, along with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, at the forefront of security challenges in the country. Over the past year, the province has witnessed a surge in militant activity, including coordinated attacks targeting multiple districts.

Last month, a wave of assaults across Quetta, Mastung, Nushki, Dalbandin, Kharan, Panjgur, Tump, Gwadar and Pasni left 36 civilians — including women and children — dead, along with 22 security and law enforcement personnel. The attacks were linked to the banned outfit Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).

In response, security forces intensified operations across the province. According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 216 militants were killed in various engagements under what it described as “Operation Raddul Fitna 1.”

Additional operations were launched in Panjgur and the outskirts of Harnai district following intelligence reports of imminent threats, resulting in the elimination of 41 militants.

Official figures indicate that 58,778 intelligence-based operations were conducted in Balochistan in 2025 — the highest number recorded in any province.

Despite these efforts, the region witnessed 1,557 terrorism-related incidents in the previous year, reflecting the scale of the ongoing security challenge.

The Turbat shooting once again highlights the volatility of the province, where civilian lives continue to be caught in the crossfire of a protracted conflict.
