Six Dead in KP as Monsoon Rains Continue
News Desk
Islamabad: Six people, including a man, a woman, and four children have died in separate incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the last 24 hours.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PMDA) the cause of these fatalities were heavy rains and lightning strikes in Bajaur, Kohat, Malakand, and Khyber Districts.
One child was also injured, and three homes suffered partial damage. In Bajaur, the boundary wall of a home collapsed amid strong winds and rain, a woman tragically lost her life.
Two children in Khyber district were swept away by flash floods. One of them was recovered dead, while the other is being searched for. Another child was injured from a lightning strike.
A man in Kohat lost his life after the roof of his collapsed, and the lives of two young children, aged seven and twelve, were claimed in a wall collapse in Malakand.
Downpour and flooding damaged three houses. PDMA officials advised local administrations to offer immediate assistance to affected families. They are told to ensure that the injured receive medical care.
PDMA had issued warnings of flooding risks from July 11 to 17, urging authorities to remain vigilant. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued flash flood alerts from July 13 to 17.
The warning concerned overflowing rivers like the Kabul, Jhelum, Chenab, and Indus, affecting urban centres and mountainous regions particularly, with an increased risk of landslides.
Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that the ongoing season will continue until July 17.
This prolonged wet spell has disrupted public utilities. Multiple electricity feeds tripped in areas of Dera Ismail Khan, Paharpur, Daraban, Proa, Panyala, and Kari Khisor, resulting in widespread power outages.
These weather events are part of a broader pattern of monsoon hazards. 116 deaths and 253 injuries from floods, landslides, electrocution, and structural collapse, were reported by NDMA in late July.
KP alone has seen 37 facilities during this period. KP is reported as one of the hardest-hit regions.
Monsoon rains are expected to persist with an increased risk of urban flooding and landslides, causing damage to critical infrastructure. PDMA and NDMA advise the residents to avoid stream beds, unstable structures, and unnecessary travel.
Authorities are on standby for rescue operations. They are urging the public to remain alert and follow official safety recommendations.
