Sindh orders govt officials to pay e-challans from own pockets

News Desk

Karachi: The Sindh government has directed all government officials to personally pay traffic e-challans issued for violations committed while driving official vehicles, amid a noticeable rise in traffic offences across various departments, The News reported on Sunday.

Officials said that since the introduction of the e-challan system in Karachi, numerous violations by users of government vehicles have been recorded, with the fines being delivered directly to government offices.

In response, the provincial government issued an order on Saturday instructing all officers and staff to clear the fines from their own pockets rather than using departmental funds.

The directive has been circulated to senior officials across major provincial bodies, including the Board of Revenue Sindh, the Enquiries & Anti-Corruption Establishment, Planning & Development Board, the Chief Minister’s Inspection Team, Sindh Public Service Commission, Sindh Service Tribunal, administrative secretaries, and divisional commissioners.

According to the letter, traffic e-challans issued under Section 116-A of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1965, include violations such as not wearing seatbelts, tinted windows, running red lights, and using mobile phones while driving. Departments have been asked to ensure strict compliance with the new policy.

Meanwhile, speed-limit signboards have been installed along Karachi’s main artery, Sharea Faisal. DSP (Admin) Kashif Nadeem said the speed limit for cars, jeeps and similar vehicles has been set at 60 km/h, while buses and trucks must adhere to a 30 km/h limit. Motorcycles are also restricted to 60 km/h.

Traffic violations will be recorded through automated cameras under the recently launched e-challan system, which aims to improve road safety and ensure adherence to traffic laws in the province.
