Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message on the International Day of Parliamentarism, called on the nation to reaffirm its commitment to strengthening parliamentary institutions, upholding democratic values, and ensuring that the voices of the people are genuinely represented in the legislative process.
He noted that the International Day of Parliamentarism, observed annually on June 30, highlights the global dedication to reinforcing democratic structures. “This day also recognizes the essential role parliaments play in fostering inclusive governance, promoting the representation of women and youth, and adopting technological advancements in legislative procedures,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of Pakistan’s legislature, the Prime Minister said, “Our Parliament stands at the heart of our democratic system. Through its legislative powers and the oversight role of its standing committees, it guarantees accountability, transparency, and executive scrutiny.”
He emphasized the constitutional provision for women’s representation under Articles 51 and 59, noting that women parliamentarians have taken on prominent leadership roles. “Currently, eight women Senators and four women MNAs serve as Chairpersons of Parliamentary Committees, breaking barriers and demonstrating inclusive, empowered leadership,” he added.
The Prime Minister stated that Parliament has actively passed progressive laws, especially those aimed at promoting gender equality and expanding social protection.
He also underscored the government’s inclusive approach in preparing the Federal Budget for FY 2025–26, saying that coalition partners were consulted and input from various political actors was welcomed—reflecting a spirit of cooperation vital for a robust democracy.
Shehbaz Sharif further noted the active participation of Pakistani lawmakers in global parliamentary diplomacy. “Through sustained engagement with international platforms like the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), our representatives continue to advocate for peace, development, and cooperation,” he said.
Referring to recent regional tensions, he praised Pakistan’s multi-party parliamentary delegation for effectively representing the country’s stance on global platforms. He also pointed to the adoption of technology to enhance transparency and accessibility in parliamentary processes.
“As we commemorate this day,” he concluded, “let us reaffirm our commitment to fortifying our parliamentary institutions, preserving democratic principles, and ensuring that the voices of our people are truly reflected in the laws that govern them.”
