Sharm el-Sheikh: In a landmark diplomatic breakthrough, US President Donald Trump joined leaders from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkiye on Monday to sign the Gaza Peace Agreement, officially marking the start of a ceasefire aimed at restoring stability to the war-torn region.

The signing ceremony, held during the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, was attended by leaders and representatives from over 20 nations.

President Trump hailed the deal as “a historic day for the entire world” and described it as “a great success,” noting that the comprehensive document lays out detailed “rules and regulations” for peace, reconstruction, and regional cooperation.

Trump says, ‘Gaza deal was a difficult deal’

Calling the Gaza peace accord one of the toughest negotiations of his presidency, President Trump said, “We’re going to be signing a document that spells out a lot of rules and regulations — it’s very comprehensive.” He acknowledged the persistence required to reach consensus, adding with a touch of humor, “I like the tough people better than the soft, easy ones. That’s a personality problem, I suspect.”

Trump hinted that the agreement would be backed by strong financial commitments, remarking, “Most of them — I can tell you — these guys have so much money. There’s more money and power sitting behind us. I love that they’re behind us.”

Broad international participation

The summit attracted participation from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, France, Britain, Italy, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Kuwait, and several other nations. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who hosted and mediated the summit, was praised by Trump for his pivotal role. “Egypt’s role in the peace agreement is commendable,” Trump said, describing Al-Sisi as “a wonderful figure” whose efforts were “crucial to this success.”

Trump also held meetings with several global leaders, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, British and Canadian prime ministers, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “The leaders of many countries are present — all are valuable,” Trump said.

Egypt, Hamas credited for constructive roles

Acknowledging Egypt’s central mediation role, Trump also commended Hamas for contributing positively to the negotiations. “Egypt played a very important role in the peace agreement,” he said. “Even Hamas has played a good role in making this happen.” He expressed gratitude to all nations involved, adding, “I am grateful to all countries for making the peace agreement a success.”

Iran, reconstruction, and regional stability

Addressing broader regional dynamics, Trump stated that Iran was now willing to engage in dialogue. “We understand that Iran wants to make an agreement. They need help, and they will negotiate with us,” he noted.

He also emphasized the importance of Gaza’s reconstruction, saying, “There is a lot of debris in Gaza, and it needs to be cleaned up.” Trump linked the breakthrough to earlier US actions, claiming, “If we had not bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities, there would have been no Gaza deal.”

Expressing optimism, he said, “We will see a lot of progress in the Middle East. This is just the beginning — the second phase of negotiations on Gaza has already begun.”

Warm bilateral meetings

During the summit, President Trump held a cordial meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where both leaders discussed regional peace and bilateral cooperation. “The two leaders shook hands warmly and discussed various issues,” officials said. Trump also met with the prime ministers of Spain, Italy, and Iraq, among others.

“This is a very historic moment — this has never happened before,” Trump told reporters, expressing confidence that the Gaza agreement would bring lasting change to the region.

Al-Sisi praises Trump’s leadership

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi lauded Trump’s role in achieving the deal, calling it “a remarkable achievement.” He said, “We appreciate the role that President Trump has played. He has the ability to achieve peace in the region.”

Reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to ensuring a lasting truce, Al-Sisi stated, “We want to make the ceasefire permanent.” In response, Trump said he would like President Al-Sisi to “join the Gaza Peace Board.”

The Gaza Peace Agreement, widely seen as a turning point for Middle East diplomacy, aims to pave the way for sustained peace, reconstruction, and cooperation across the region.
