Karachi: Several people were held on Sunday after a Sindhi Culture Day rally on Sharea Faisal turned violent, according to Karachi police.
Law enforcement officials said participants pelted police vehicles with stones, shattering the glass of patrol vans and a water tanker.
The clash reportedly broke out when police asked rally participants to move the procession from Kala Pul towards Saddar. The demonstrators resisted and began throwing stones, causing damage to public property.
Police resorted to shelling to disperse the crowd and arrested two individuals for allegedly attacking police vehicles.
Traffic authorities said Sharea Faisal remained closed at the FTC due to the unrest, with vehicles being diverted from Kala Pul towards Saddar.
Sindhi Culture Day is being celebrated today across the province with traditional enthusiasm to showcase Sindh’s centuries-old heritage. The day is marked annually on the first Sunday of December.
Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari said Sindh’s culture represented tolerance, peace, and national unity, adding that it was the nation’s collective responsibility to pass these values to future generations.
He noted that Sindh gained a distinct constitutional and cultural identity after its separation from the Bombay Presidency in 1936, and recalled that the Sindh Assembly was the first to pass a resolution calling for the creation of Pakistan.
