Mirpur: Authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have launched an inquiry after a prisoner was mistakenly released from District Jail Kotli due to a case of identical names.

According to a spokesperson of the AJK Home Department, the error occurred because two inmates in the jail shared the same name and were serving sentences for similar crimes. As a result of departmental negligence, the wrong individual was freed.

Police have since re-arrested the mistakenly released prisoner, and an inquiry committee has been constituted to identify those responsible for the lapse. The committee will submit its findings within seven days, and disciplinary action will follow in accordance with official procedures.

The spokesperson emphasized that such negligence would not be tolerated and assured that corrective measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
