Russia Proposes Mediation Between Islamabad, Kabul

Islamabad: Russia has offered to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan to help defuse escalating border tensions, becoming the second regional power after Iran to propose such an intervention, 24NewsHD reported on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry described both Pakistan and Afghanistan as important partners for Moscow, warning that ongoing friction along the border posed a threat to wider regional security.
She said that ensuring stability in the region remained a top priority for Russia and the international community, adding that diplomatic efforts were essential for achieving lasting peace.
Calling dialogue the only sustainable means of resolving disputes, the spokesperson urged Islamabad and Kabul to exercise restraint, avoid any steps that could worsen tensions, and keep communication channels open.

Russia’s offer follows a similar initiative from Iran earlier this month. On November 9, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi telephoned Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to express concern over the deteriorating situation and to propose mediation between Islamabad and the Afghan Taliban, according to diplomatic sources cited by 24NewsHD.
Araqchi encouraged both sides to continue negotiations, stressing that all disagreements must be resolved through peaceful dialogue. He also highlighted the long-standing ties among Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Islamabad across multiple sectors.
During the call, Dar briefed his Iranian counterpart on Pakistan’s recent engagements with Afghan officials and the latest developments along the border. Both ministers also discussed bilateral relations and broader regional issues.
Araqchi reiterated Iran’s readiness to support efforts aimed at peace and reconciliation, while Dar emphasised that regional stability remains Pakistan’s foremost priority. The two sides agreed to maintain close contact and continue consultations on the matter.
