Rawal Dam Spillways Opened After Water Level Hits Critical Mark
News Desk
Islamabad: Following continuous rainfall in the federal capital and its surrounding areas, the water level at Rawal Dam rose to a critical threshold of 1,750 feet on Tuesday, prompting the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration to open the dam’s spillways to prevent overflow.
According to a spokesperson for the ICT administration, the controlled release of water is being carefully monitored to ensure public safety. The decision to open the spillways was taken as a precautionary measure to protect the dam’s structure and avoid flooding in adjacent low-lying areas.
“The water discharge operation is expected to last for approximately five hours,” the spokesperson said, adding that the process is being supervised on-site by the Assistant Commissioner of Nilore.

All safety protocols were strictly observed before the release, with emergency services including rescue teams, ambulances, and police personnel deployed at key bridges and vulnerable downstream locations to manage any potential risks.
Authorities confirmed that water will continue to be discharged until the level drops to a safer threshold of 1,746 feet. The administration has also issued an advisory urging residents near streams and low-lying regions to remain alert and follow official safety instructions.
This controlled release is part of standard monsoon season procedures aimed at managing reservoir capacity during periods of heavy rainfall.
Continuous monitoring of the dam’s water level and prevailing weather conditions is underway, and further measures will be taken as necessary.
