Rain, Snowfall Grip KP, GB, Sindh to Remain Cold and Dry

News Desk

Islamabad: A fresh spell of rain and snowfall across large parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan has sharply intensified cold weather, while the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast cold and dry conditions for most districts of Sindh over the next 24 hours.

In Peshawar and several adjoining districts, including Hangu and Charsadda, rain has continued since Sunday night, causing a noticeable drop in temperatures. Similar conditions prevailed for a second consecutive day in Abbottabad and its surrounding areas, further deepening the winter chill.

In KP’s upper districts—Chitral, Kalam, Mahodand, Malam Jabba, Galiyat, and other mountainous regions—heavy snowfall has blanketed hills and valleys, significantly intensifying cold conditions. Authorities have also forecast the possibility of more snowfall in Galiyat in the coming hours.

Director General Galiyat Development Authority, Shah Rukh Ali, advised tourists to take precautionary measures, including wearing warm clothing, using snow chains on vehicles, carrying extra fuel, and ensuring adequate food and essential supplies before travelling to the region.

In Mansehra district, rain was reported across all five tehsils, including Kaghan Valley, Naran, Batakundi, Besal, and nearby areas, while Babusar Top and surrounding regions experienced intermittent snowfall for the second consecutive day. The snowfall has significantly increased cold intensity in the upper mountainous areas.

Experts said the rain and snowfall would help reduce dust pollution, seasonal illnesses, and water shortages, besides having a positive impact on crops and easing drought-like conditions, although the cold spell has further tightened its grip.

Meanwhile, in Astore district of Gilgit-Baltistan, intermittent rainfall has continued since Sunday, while heavy snowfall persisted in upper and mountainous areas, pushing temperatures below freezing point and disrupting daily life.

More than two feet of fresh snow has accumulated in upper localities, including Parshing, Tarshing, Darelay, Mirmalik, Zilay Bala, Qamri, Minimarg Domel, Kala Pani, and Chalam. Slippery road conditions have developed on routes linking Astore to Deosai and other upper areas, causing difficulties for commuters.

Power supply and communication services have been disrupted in some areas due to heavy snowfall. However, the district administration said the situation is being closely monitored, with snow-clearing machinery and staff placed on high alert to keep roads open.

On the directives of the Deputy Commissioner Astore, all relevant departments have been put on emergency alert. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, wear warm clothing, and immediately contact authorities in case of any emergency.

Dry weather for most parts of Sindh

In contrast, the PMD has forecast cold and dry weather for most parts of Sindh during the next 24 hours. However, fog is likely to develop during morning or night hours in Sukkur, Rohri, Shikarpur, Kashmor, Mohenjodaro, and surrounding areas.

The Met Office said cold and dry conditions would continue to prevail across the province, urging commuters to remain cautious in fog-prone areas.
