Punjab Schools Go Green with Five Smart Waste Bins

Lahore: A new wave of environmental awareness is set to sweep through Punjab’s schools as the government rolls out an innovative “Smart Waste Management Process” featuring five-coloured garbage bins.

The initiative, spearheaded under the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aims not just to tackle mounting waste challenges but to instill eco-friendly habits in the younger generation.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), each colour has been assigned a clear purpose:

Yellow: Paper and general garbage

Green: Bottles, glass, and laboratory waste

Gray: Organic matter like fruit peels, food waste, and leaves

Red: Metals such as iron and other scraps

Orange: Plastic waste, earmarked for recycling

This structured system promises to reduce landfill waste and encourage recycling, while also familiarising students with global best practices in waste segregation.

From Classrooms to Communities

In the first phase, the programme will be implemented across both government and private educational institutions in Punjab. The government has set a strict deadline of September 30 for installing the bins, with progress closely monitored by the EPA.

Senior Minister for Environment and Climate Change Marriyum Aurangzeb is leading the project, with Education Minister Rana Sikandar and Local Government Minister Zeeshan Malik tasked with ensuring swift implementation.

Schools that meet the prescribed standards will even receive certification from the EPA—a symbolic but powerful recognition of their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Changing Behaviours, One Bin at a Time

Officials say the goal extends beyond waste collection. By engaging children in daily segregation of waste, the government hopes to cultivate lifelong eco-conscious behaviours.

“Educational institutions can also contact the Punjab Management Helpline (1139) to collect waste, ensuring no bin is left unattended,” an official said, adding that the Local Government and Community Development Department will play a crucial role in transporting and processing the collected waste.

A Small Step, A Big Impact

Though it begins with schools, the Smart Waste Management Project is expected to ripple outwards, serving as a model for businesses, offices, and eventually households across Punjab.

By making children the front-runners of this campaign, the government aims to shift public perception about waste—from being a problem to being a resource.

As the bright-coloured bins line up in Punjab’s classrooms, they symbolise more than waste collection; they mark the beginning of a cultural change toward sustainability.
