Punjab Govt Faces Questions Over Alleged Luxury Jet Purchase
News Desk
Lahore: A storm of questions is swirling around the Punjab government after claims surfaced that it has added a luxury business jet to its official fleet.
While social media speculation initially fueled the controversy, official documents now indicate that substantial public funds have been approved for the operation and maintenance of a newly inducted VIP aircraft, even as the government remains publicly silent on whether the jet has been purchased, leased or otherwise acquired.
At the center of the debate is the reported induction of a Gulfstream G500, one of the world’s most advanced long-range business jets manufactured by Gulfstream Aerospace.
Social Media Claim to Official Record
The issue first gained traction after a defense and security-focused account on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that the Punjab government had acquired a Gulfstream G500 for VIP transport. The post quickly went viral, igniting political debate and raising questions about government priorities amid economic pressures.
While there was no immediate confirmation or denial from authorities, an official summary obtained by Urdu News reveals that the Punjab cabinet approved a supplementary grant of more than Rs86 crore during the current financial year (2025–26) to meet operational and maintenance requirements for a newly added aircraft.

The document states that the aircraft has been inducted to ensure “high standards of safety, efficiency and reliability” in air travel for the #, Governor and other key dignitaries.
According to official records, the matter was placed before the provincial cabinet on the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The cabinet subsequently approved the supplementary grant in accordance with procedural rules.
The summary notes that the relevant department lacked sufficient funds to meet the essential operational needs of the aircraft, necessitating additional budgetary allocation.
The approved grant covers a wide range of expenses, including:
- Pilot and technical staff training
- Fuel and insurance
- Subscription and maintenance programs
- Taxes and regulatory payments
- IT equipment and spare parts
- Salaries for cleaning staff and support personnel
Vehicle repairs and other logistical costs
The document further reveals that pilots will undergo refresher training in the United States every four to six months, while initial type-rating training for engineers will also take place abroad.
The Gulfstream G500, described in the official record as a large, long-range aircraft, consumes significantly more fuel than the older Hawker aircraft previously used. This higher operational cost is cited as one of the key reasons for the supplementary funding.

In November 2025, three pilots were inducted on deputation from the Pakistan Air Force and will receive monthly flying allowances. The government is also reportedly seeking additional mechanics and aviation consultants to support operations.
Purchase, Lease or Induction?
Despite the detailed financial allocations, the official document refers only to the aircraft being “inducted” into the fleet.
There is no explicit mention of whether it has been purchased outright or acquired through a lease or alternative arrangement, a distinction that remains central to the controversy.
Industry estimates suggest that a Gulfstream G500 typically costs between $38 million and $45 million, equivalent to roughly Rs10 to Rs12 billion.
However, no official confirmation regarding the financial terms of acquisition has been provided.
Aircraft Profile
The Gulfstream G500 is widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated business jets currently in service.
It features advanced fly-by-wire technology, enhanced security systems, reduced cabin pressure for passenger comfort, and a range of approximately 5,300 nautical miles.
With a top speed exceeding 900 kilometers per hour and seating capacity for up to 19 passengers, it is commonly used for long-haul VIP and corporate travel.
Official Silence
Urdu News contacted several senior officials, including the Punjab Home Secretary, to verify the nature of the aircraft’s acquisition. However, no official response was received by the time of publication.
While the government has yet to clarify whether the jet has been purchased or leased, official documents clearly indicate that significant financial resources have been earmarked for its operational readiness.
The lack of transparency surrounding the aircraft’s acquisition has only intensified public scrutiny, leaving key questions unanswered as the debate continues. Additional input from Urdu News.
