Public Urged to Avoid Swimming in Unsafe Water During Heatwave

Muzaffargarh: As a blistering heatwave grips the region, medical professionals are warning the public—particularly the youth—about the potential health hazards of swimming in public pools and tube wells during the summer.

Dr. Mustafa Zafar, Deputy Medical Superintendent at the District Headquarters Hospital Muzaffargarh, revealed that the hospital has received several cases involving complications linked to swimming in unsupervised or unhygienic water sources. He stressed the need for urgent precautions to avoid serious health consequences.

“Swimming pools often serve as breeding grounds for bacteria and infections,” Dr. Zafar told the media. “With multiple people using the same water and shared drainage systems, the risk of transmitting diseases increases dramatically.”

He further warned that sudden exposure to cold water—especially after prolonged exposure to the sun—can lead to vascular shock, potentially increasing the risk of paralysis. Skin infections are another significant concern, he noted. “If someone with a contagious skin disease enters the water, others using the same pool or tube well are also at risk of contracting it.”

Dr. Zafar strongly advised people to stay indoors during peak heat hours and increase fluid intake to stay hydrated. He urged citizens to avoid swimming in uncontrolled or unclean water bodies, particularly during the current heatwave.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted a continued rise in temperatures in the coming days. With more people expected to seek relief in water sources, local authorities and health experts are calling for greater public awareness to help prevent avoidable health emergencies during the summer.
