Protect Insects, Protect Birds

Islamabad: Muhammad Arif Goheer, Executive Director of the Global Climate Change Impact Studies Centre (GCISC), has emphasized the dire effects of climate change on migratory bird species, which are facing increased threats due to habitat loss, shifting weather patterns, and degradation of ecosystems.

Speaking on the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day, observed on May 11 and October 12, Goheer highlighted how rising temperatures and environmental degradation are disrupting the natural migration routes of many bird species, putting their survival at risk.

This year’s theme, “Protect Insects, Protect Birds,” focuses on the crucial role insects play in supporting migratory birds, both during breeding seasons and long-distance migrations. Goheer stressed the need for coordinated global efforts to conserve natural habitats and insect populations, which are vital to the birds’ survival.

“Insects are an essential source of energy for many migratory bird species, and the loss of insect populations due to agriculture, urban development, and pesticide use is severely impacting bird migration,” said Goheer.

He called for proactive conservation measures, including reducing pesticide use, promoting organic farming, and protecting natural vegetation to support both birds and insects.

The campaign underscores the importance of preserving ecosystems that birds rely on during their migratory journeys to ensure their survival and maintain ecological balance.
