Rawalpindi: The Al-Shifa Trust (AST) has urged residents of the twin cities to take preventive measures as pollen levels continue to rise, triggering a surge in allergy-related eye issues.

Dr Inam-ul-Haq, a senior consultant at AST Eye Hospital, warned that the high pollen concentration is causing an increase in symptoms such as red, itchy, burning eyes, excessive tearing, swelling, and light sensitivity.

He emphasized that while eye allergies are not typically dangerous, they can cause significant discomfort and disrupt daily activities.

“People with pre-existing allergies or asthma should take extra precautions, including wearing protective sunglasses and using air purifiers,” Dr Inam advised.

He recommended staying indoors during peak pollen hours, keeping windows closed, and using air conditioning to filter air.

Dr. Inam explained that eye allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to allergens, releasing histamine and other chemicals that cause inflammation, redness, and excessive tearing. He advised affected individuals to use prescribed eye drops such as loteprednol (Alrex, Lotemax) but cautioned against prolonged use due to potential side effects.

He added that shutting car windows and using air conditioning can further help reduce exposure to allergens.

Highlighting AST’s commitment to healthcare, Dr. Inam informed that nearly 80% of patients receive free treatment at AST-run hospitals in Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Kohat, Sukkur, Muzaffarabad, and Gilgit.
