PM Urges Public Awareness on Blood Donation

Islamabad: On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, observed annually on June 14, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the selfless “voluntary heroes” who donate blood to save lives. He emphasized the urgent need to raise public awareness about the importance of regular blood donations for patients undergoing surgeries, childbirth, and those battling serious illnesses such as cancer and anemia.
“This day serves as a global tribute to voluntary donors who, through their noble acts, give countless people a second chance at life. It also highlights the pressing need for continuous blood donations,” the prime minister stated in his message to the nation.
Referring to the 2025 theme for World Blood Donor Day — “Give blood, Give hope: together we save lives” — the prime minister noted that it powerfully underscores the life-saving impact of regular blood donations.
“We express our heartfelt gratitude and deep respect for our blood donors — the silent saviors. Donating blood is not just a compassionate act; it is a critical necessity for the healthcare system of any country,” he remarked.
Citing World Health Organization data, the prime minister pointed out that Pakistan faces a significant shortage of safe blood supplies due to limited donations. He assured the public that the government is fully aware of this challenge and is working through the National Blood Transfusion Program (NBTP) to run awareness campaigns aimed at increasing donations.
However, he stressed the need for stronger, collective efforts to overcome this growing concern. Currently, only 10% of blood donors in Pakistan are voluntary, with the majority of donations coming from patients’ relatives and friends.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called on all healthy and compassionate citizens, particularly the youth, to recognize their civic responsibility and contribute to this humanitarian effort by donating blood. He also acknowledged the efforts of various private blood donor organizations playing a vital role in this mission.
“Together, we can build a safer, more protected, and healthier Pakistan,” he concluded.
