Quetta: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Quetta on Saturday for a day-long visit to participate in a high-level jirga aimed at addressing the worsening law and order situation in Balochistan.
Upon his arrival at Quetta Airport, the prime minister was received by Acting Governor Abdul Khaliq Achakzai, Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, and other senior provincial officials, according to aviation authorities.
The jirga, convened in the provincial capital, has brought together tribal elders, political leaders, provincial ministers, and lawmakers from across Balochistan.
The forum is expected to hold wide-ranging consultations on the deteriorating security landscape and explore mechanisms for improved coordination among key stakeholders to ensure lasting peace.
Official sources said that PM Shehbaz will seek input from tribal elders and local leadership on internal security and development issues. The prime minister is also expected to call for greater community involvement in decision-making to help restore stability in the region.
The jirga is part of ongoing efforts by the federal and provincial governments to engage local communities in tackling the province’s complex security challenges.
Later in the day, the premier is scheduled to visit the victims of the recent Sorab blast, which claimed several lives and injured many others. He will inquire after the condition of the wounded and assure them of the government’s full support for their recovery and rehabilitation.
The visit comes amid rising tensions in parts of Balochistan, where incidents of violence targeting security forces and civilians have increased in recent months.
The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating terrorism and restoring peace through coordinated action with provincial authorities and local communities.
