Peace Efforts Pave Way for Torkham Reopening

Peshawar/Lahore: Preparations are underway to reopen the Pakistan-Afghanistan Torkham trade crossing, following the recent ceasefire between the two neighbouring countries aimed at easing border tensions and promoting regional trade.
According to Customs sources, all staff have been directed to report immediately to the Torkham terminal as authorities prepare to resume cross-border trade operations. A cargo scanning machine has also been reinstalled at the terminal to facilitate the clearance of trade vehicles. The scanner had been removed between October 11 and 12 amid heightened tensions along the border.
The Torkham crossing had remained closed for the past eight days due to escalations between the two sides. Afghan security sources said hundreds of passengers have gathered on the Afghan side after learning that the border may reopen soon.
Meanwhile, SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry former president Iftikhar Ali Malik welcomed the ceasefire, describing it as a crucial step toward durable peace and sustainable economic growth in the region.
In a statement issued in Lahore, Malik said the truce—facilitated through the diplomatic efforts of Türkiye and Qatar—marks a highly positive development that could pave the way for long-term regional stability and prosperity.
He said business communities on both sides of the border have long sought a peaceful environment conducive to trade, investment, and connectivity projects. “With the cessation of hostilities and improved border coordination, trade volumes are expected to rise, transport corridors to reopen, and joint ventures in energy, food, and infrastructure to revive,” he added.
Malik also appreciated Kabul’s commitment not to support elements involved in terrorist activities against Pakistan and urged that this assurance be implemented in letter and spirit to build mutual trust. He further commended the mediating roles of Türkiye and Qatar, saying their constructive diplomacy demonstrates the strength of Islamic unity and cooperation.
