Islamabad: In Islamabad, 2023 has unfolded as a distressing period for the country’s railways, marked by an unrelenting series of tragedies that have raised serious doubts about the safety and dependability of Pakistan’s railway system.

As the year draws to an end, a sobering count reveals a shocking 77 train accidents of varying nature since January 1, signaling no visible decline in these concerning incidents.

Among the most devastating was the Hazara Express derailment near Nawabshah, resulting in a tragic loss of 30 lives and leaving over 100 individuals injured. Unfortunately, post-incident investigations have struggled to identify the root cause, allocate responsibility, or implement preventive measures for the future.

What’s particularly troubling is the escalating frequency of these incidents, indicating a deteriorating safety situation within the railway network. What was once a reliable mode of transport now teeters on the edge of danger and unpredictability due to inadequate resources, insufficient funding, and mismanagement hindering essential safety measures.

A substantial infusion of resources into infrastructure and modern technology is crucial, alongside enhanced training programs for railway personnel to bolster competence and readiness.

The current trajectory is unsustainable; a transformative shift is vital to redeem the railways’ standing and functionality. Meaningful investment, coupled with a commitment to overhaul, holds the key to averting future tragedies and reinstating public confidence in a transportation mode that has seen better days.
