Lahore: Lahore has completed Pakistan’s first electricity-generating road, named Route 47—a 4.5-kilometer-long smart and high-tech corridor connecting Kalma Chowk, Ferozepur Road, Gulberg, Walton Road, and the Lahore Ring Road.

The road, developed as part of the Lahore Central Business District (CBD) project, features solar-powered sidewalks capable of generating up to 1.5 megawatts of electricity. It is the first of its kind in the country.

According to official sources, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is expected to inaugurate Route 47 this Sunday.

Built at a cost of approximately Rs. 9 billion by the CBD Authority, Route 47 includes a modern flyover, separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, a dedicated cycle track, a scenic lake, and a specialized drainage system to manage rainwater.

In addition to its energy efficiency, the road’s smart infrastructure aims to offer commuters much-needed comfort during the hot summer months. Solar panels not only generate clean energy but also provide shade along the pedestrian pathways.

Following the anticipated inauguration, Route 47 will be officially opened to the public, marking a milestone in Lahore’s urban development and Pakistan’s push toward smart city initiatives.
