Islamabad: Pakistan’s critically acclaimed horror film Deemak has been officially selected for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Film Festival 2025, scheduled to take place in Yongchuan, Chongqing, China, from July 3 to 7.

The invitation marks another milestone in the international journey of Deemak, a Geo Films production that blends horror with South Asian folklore. The film will be showcased alongside entries from ten SCO member states and two observer countries under the festival’s theme, “Film & Technology – Charm of the SCO.”

Organised under China’s rotating presidency of the SCO, the festival aims to promote regional cultural cooperation through cinema. It is being co-hosted by the China Film Administration and the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government. The event will feature film screenings, competitions, exhibitions, and forums focused on technological innovation in cinema across the SCO region.

Writer and director Rafay Rashdi has been officially invited to represent the film at the festival. Expressing his gratitude, Rashdi said, “It’s an honour for Deemak to represent Pakistani cinema on such a respected international platform. This selection underscores the growing recognition of horror storytelling rooted in South Asian folklore. We’re proud to share a uniquely local narrative with global audiences.”

The festival’s host committee will cover all travel and accommodation expenses for the film’s delegation during their stay in China.

Deemak has already enjoyed a successful theatrical release in Pakistan and continues to receive acclaim on the international film circuit. Geo Films, known for backing landmark projects such as Khuda Kay Liye, Bol, Teefa in Trouble, The Legend of Maula Jatt, Donkey King, and The Glassworker, adds Deemak to its growing list of globally recognized cinematic achievements.
