Pakistan Witnesses 2025’s First Brightest Supermoon
News Desk
Islamabad: Pakistanis were treated to a dazzling celestial display on Wednesday evening as the country witnessed its first and brightest supermoon of 2025 — known as the Beaver Moon.
According to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the supermoon reached peak illumination at 6:19 pm, shining 7.9% larger and 16% brighter than a typical full moon due to its proximity to Earth at 356,980 kilometres (221,817 miles).
SUPARCO explained that a supermoon occurs when the Moon’s full phase coincides with its closest point to Earth, known as perigee. This month’s Beaver Moon marked the second in a trio of consecutive supermoons — following October’s and preceding another in December.

While the difference in size and brightness may appear subtle to the naked eye, astronomers noted that such events offer a rare and captivating view of the night sky. Supermoons typically occur three to four times a year, depending on the alignment of the Moon’s orbit.
The term Beaver Moon originates from North American and colonial folklore, referring to the time when trappers would set beaver traps before winter’s freeze.
Earlier, NASA also described the event as special for its visual impact, saying that although a supermoon is not physically larger, its closeness to Earth can make it appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than when it is farthest away.
