Pakistan Welcomes New Year with Rs10+ Cut in Petrol Price
News Desk
Islamabad: Pakistan will welcome the New Year with significant relief for consumers as the federal government on Tuesday announced a reduction of over Rs10 per litre in the price of petrol for the next fortnight, effective January 1, 2026.
According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs10.28 per litre, bringing the new rate to Rs253.17 per litre until January 15.
The Petroleum Division said the decision was taken on the basis of recommendations made by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to the federal government.
Meanwhile, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been cut by Rs8.57 per litre, setting the new price at Rs257.08 per litre.
In the previous fortnightly review, the government had reduced the price of diesel by Rs14 per litre, while keeping petrol prices unchanged.
Petrol is primarily used by commuters in small vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws, and private cars. Changes in petrol prices have a direct impact on the budgets of middle- and lower-middle-income households, who rely on fuel for daily commuting.
High-speed diesel, on the other hand, is widely used in the transport and agricultural sectors, including trucks, buses, trains, tractors, tube wells, and other farm machinery.
Its price is considered inflationary, as increases often lead to higher transportation costs and contribute to rising prices of vegetables and other essential food items.
The latest reduction is expected to provide short-term relief to consumers and help ease inflationary pressures.
