Beijing: Pakistan’s participation in the 9th Sichuan Agriculture Expo will inject impetus into the ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and China in the agriculture sector, said Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Moin ul Haque.
Moin ul Haque participated in the opening ceremony of the Sichuan Agriculture Expo in Chengdu, where Pakistan is the Country of Honour. The Pakistan National Pavilion at the Expo introduced the famous tourist sites in Pakistan and more than a dozen Pakistani companies displayed their agricultural products.
Ambassador highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Pakistan and China that are based on political trust, strategic communication and practical cooperation.
Haque also highlighted the close cooperation between Pakistan and Sichuan, including through sister province and city collaborations.
Recently, five important agriculture SPS (sanitary and phytosanitary)protocols have been finalised between the two sides, giving Pakistan access to a market of US$30 billion in cooked beef, dairy, chillies, cherries and other livestock products. This endeavour will contribute to Pakistan’s efforts to increase its exports to China.
The Sichuan Agriculture Expo is the largest agriculture expo in western China and caters to over 400 million people. More than 2000 exhibitors are attending the Expo and more than 200,000 people are expected to visit it.
It is to mention that Sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures are quarantine and biosecurity measures which are applied to protect human, animal or plant life or health from risks arising from the introduction, establishment and spread of pests and diseases and from risks arising from additives, toxins and contaminants in food and feed. The SPS Agreement provides a framework of rules to guide WTO Members in the development, adoption and enforcement of sanitary (human or animal life or health) and phytosanitary (plant life or health) measures which may affect trade.
