New York: Pakistan, representing the Islamic countries, has proposed the convening of an International Peace Conference on Palestine to implement UN resolutions concerning the restoration of Palestinians’ inalienable rights to self-determination within a two-state solution.
During the UN General Assembly session following the US veto on the February 20 Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, Ambassador Munir Akram expressed disappointment over the global community’s failure to halt Israeli aggression against Gaza. He highlighted the significant loss of Palestinian lives, especially among women and children, totaling 29,700 casualties.
Addressing the Assembly as the acting chairperson of the OIC group at the United Nations, Ambassador Akram emphasized the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza over the past five months, marked by extensive destruction of infrastructure and civilian casualties.
He warned of the risk of widespread starvation due to insufficient food supplies and essential services, reiterating the call for a ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery.
Ambassador Akram also voiced concern over the potential dismantling of UNRWA and the freezing of funding for the agency, citing the imminent threat of mass starvation in Gaza.
He urged the Assembly to take decisive action to end the violence and support the Palestinian people in achieving their right to self-determination, including the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
