Over 91,000 Children Miss Polio Vaccine In KP

Peshawar: Nearly 91,000 children under the age of five in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa missed polio doses during the seven-day police immunisation blitz that began on January 16 in the province, according to a health department report.

The report stated that in 36 districts of the province, more than 71530 children were not at home when receiving vaccinations, and 20305 parents refused to give their kids polio drops. Out of the 7.459 million children who were scheduled to receive vaccinations during the week-long campaign, 7.455 million received vitamin A and anti-polio drops.

It said that the majority of the refusal cases were recorded from Peshawar, where 7,352 parents refused to get their kids immunised. Similar to this, 10,898 kids were not at home when polio teams visited. Following Bannu with 2251 refusal cases, North Waziristan was the second district in the province where 2919 parents refused to vaccinate their children against polio.

In Peshawar, as many as 903297 children are vaccinated against crippling polio disease. The report said that last year 20 cases of polio were reported from three southern districts of the province, including 17 from North Waziristan, two from Lakki Marwat and one from South Waziristan.
