Over 270 Prisoners to be released before Eid under Humanitarian Gesture

Lahore: In a humanitarian gesture ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a 90-day special amnesty for selected prisoners across the province. The initiative aims to allow reformed inmates an opportunity to reunite with their families during the festive occasion.

The Punjab Home Department has formally issued a notification under Rule 216 of the Pakistan Prison Rules 1978, following the chief minister’s directives. The amnesty is expected to benefit approximately 450 prisoners, with 270 slated for release from various jails across the province in time for Eid celebrations.

Officials stated that the amnesty applies to inmates who have shown good conduct during incarceration or whose fines have been paid by well-wishers. The move is consistent with established legal procedures and the eligibility criteria defined in the prison regulations.

However, the special concession comes with strict exclusions. Prisoners convicted of serious offences such as terrorism, sectarian violence, espionage, sedition, or other anti-state activities will not be eligible. The amnesty also excludes those found guilty of murder, adultery, robbery, drug trafficking, kidnapping, financial embezzlement, or causing losses to the national treasury.

Authorities emphasized that the initiative is grounded in humanitarian principles while ensuring that public safety and legal accountability remain uncompromised.
