Islamabad: The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has successfully installed over 200,000 state-of-the-art Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters across various areas in Rawalpindi City and Cantonment Circles.

Project Director Mohsin Raza Gillani described the AMI initiative as a revolutionary step in the power sector by the government. He stated that the project is progressing successfully in two operational circles of IESCO: Rawalpindi City and Rawalpindi Cantonment.

According to the latest reports, over 200,000 old meters have been replaced with AMI meters, with a goal to replace all outdated meters in Rawalpindi City, Rawalpindi Cantonment, Taxila, and surrounding areas by January 2026.

AMI meters have already been installed in several locations, including Chandi Chowk, Muslim Town, Ghangal, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Road, Gulzar-e-Quaid, PWD, Korang Town, Pakistan Town, Khana Area, Sawan Garden, Media Town, CBR, and Aghosh Town. Currently, installations are underway in the Chaklala and Defence areas of Rawalpindi, with approximately 3,000 meters being replaced daily.

Additionally, AMI meters are being installed in industries and on high-loss feeders to enhance the reliability of power supply and reduce line losses and power theft.

The introduction of AMI meters is expected to result in 100% accurate and timely meter readings, effective monitoring of power theft, precise estimation of power demand and supply, and real-time monitoring of electricity consumption.

This initiative will also improve customer service by automating complaint registration for faulty meters, ensuring a balanced distribution system, and reducing complaints related to burnt transformers and meters.

Gillani emphasized that this is a pilot project in Pakistan, making IESCO the first power distribution company in the country to implement such a system. To raise public awareness about the benefits of AMI technology, IESCO has initiated an awareness campaign and is collaborating with international experts.

While acknowledging some technical and operational challenges, Gillani assured that the team is addressing customer complaints professionally and swiftly. He urged the support of valued customers, highlighting that their cooperation will contribute to the timely completion of the project and its positive impact on the power sector.
