Islamabad: A health expert on Wednesday sounded the alarm about the devastating dental consequences of excessive meat consumption during Eid-ul-Adha, urging the public to take precautions and prioritize oral hygiene.
Consultant Implantologist Dr. Ali Hussain, while talking to a private news channel, emphasized the importance of stringent oral hygiene measures during Eid-ul-Adha, warning that excessive meat consumption can lead to severe dental issues.
“Maintaining rigorous brushing, flossing and rinsing habits is crucial to prevent meat particles from getting stuck between teeth and gums, causing irritation and inflammation,” Dr. Hussain advised.
He stressed that individuals, especially those with dental implants or sensitive teeth and gums should be mindful of their meat intake and prioritize oral health during the festivities.
“If the swelling is severe or doesn’t improve with home care, other factors like gum disease or a dental abscess could be involved,” he warned, advising individuals to seek professional dental care if symptoms persist.
Overindulging in meat at a festive gathering heightens the risk of particles becoming lodged between teeth and gums, potentially triggering discomfort and inflammation, he mentioned.
To maintain good oral health during Eid-ul-Adha, Dr. Ali Hussain advises individuals to limit sugary and acidic foods alongside meat, choose leaner meat cuts and drink plenty of water to help flush out food particles and bacteria.
Additionally, chewing sugar-free gum after meals can stimulate saliva production and neutralize acids.
He also recommends scheduling a dental check-up after the festivities to ensure oral health is on track.
Dr. Ali Hussain further noted that gum inflammation can also stem from sensitivity to certain products or allergic reactions to new oral care items, such as toothpaste or mouthwash, leading to edema. Identifying and avoiding the causative agent is crucial in such cases, he emphasized.
Dr. Ali Hussain recommended moderation in meat consumption during Eid-ul-Adha, advising individuals to avoid overindulging to minimize potential oral health issues.
