Faisalabad/Sialkot: As the drenching monsoon rains sweep across Punjab, the province has witnessed two tragic roof collapse incidents on Tuesday, causing death of a woman and nine injuries, including five children.
The incidents occurred in Faisalabad’s Jaranwala Tehsil and Sialkot’s Pasrur Tehsil. This rainy season has raised concerns about the old resident areas that are poorly maintained.
The roof of a weakened house collapsed in Chak No 375-GB Jaranwala, Faisalabad. The first report by Rescue 1122 said this incident claimed the life of Shamim Akhtar, wife of Shahid Iqbal.
Six other family members were injured including two children, Ali (10) and Ladi (4), as well as Abrar (40), Bushra (25), Javed Iqbal (25), and Khadija Bibi.
The deceased and injured were transferred with care to the THQ Hospital by the first responders.
Just a few hours apart, a similar incident was reported in Parel Chondha Road in Parur, Sialkot.
The roof caved in on three sisters, Areeba (12), Noor (14), and Iman (13), who were sleeping in a room. Swift response from the rescue helped them pull the girls out of the rubble.
Areeb and Noor were taken to Allama Iqbal Hospital for examination and treatment, meanwhile Iman was treated at the scene as she sustained minor injuries.
Authorities warned of high risks to life and property amidst the continued rainfalls. These incidents underscore an urgent need of structural refinements and preventive measures in vulnerable regions across Punjab.
As the downpour continues, disaster management agencies have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any signs of structural weakness in houses to avoid further loss of lives.
