Jerusalem: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Wednesday that “now is the time” to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza, urging Israel to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation with Iran.
This marks Blinken’s 11th visit to the region since the outbreak of the Gaza war and his first since violence between Israel and Hezbollah escalated into all-out war last month.
Despite multiple US attempts to mediate an end to the Gaza war and contain its regional ramifications, past efforts have been unsuccessful.
During his visit, Blinken emphasized that since the onset of the conflict on October 7 last year, Israel has achieved significant strategic objectives concerning Gaza.
He urged Israeli officials to transition these successes into “enduring, strategic success” as he departed from Israel, following meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other high-ranking officials.
Regarding Israel’s commitment to retaliate for an attack from Iran on October 1, Blinken stressed the importance of responding in ways that do not exacerbate tensions in the region.
Following his discussions in Israel, Blinken traveled to Saudi Arabia, where negotiations toward normalizing relations with Israel have been stalled pending the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The US Secretary of State reiterated his commitment to facilitating diplomatic ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, highlighting an “incredible opportunity” for regional cooperation.
Blinken’s itinerary also includes visits to Qatar and Britain, where he is expected to engage in discussions with Arab counterparts regarding the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.
