Netflix Star Breaks Down ‘Samurai’ Fight Secrets
News Desk
Islamabad: Netflix’s new historical action drama Last Samurai Standing is earning widespread praise — especially for its intricately designed fight sequences.
Now, the man behind much of that work, actor-producer and action choreographer Junichi Okada, is opening up about the creative process that shaped the show’s standout action.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Okada said his dual role required a deep focus on how movement informs character. “As an actor and fight choreographer, it’s very important to work on the choreography and the whole structure of those movements,” he noted. “Having that element actually adds to building the character.”
Okada said he approaches choreography as an extension of storytelling, tailoring each fighting style to reflect personality, strength and limitations. He pointed to the character Iroha, played by Kaya Kiyohara, as a key example.

“You know she’s a female, so she may not be that powerful,” he explained. “In her fights, there’s an element of yin and yang — what’s visible and what’s not. Sometimes she sets a bait before revealing her true intention.”
Okada said crafting believable combat for smaller characters required careful attention to realism. “When she’s fighting a very physically large, stout male, it’s impossible for her to fight equally. We have to think about what would be realistic and how she would pull this off.”
He emphasized that every sequence was designed with coherence and authenticity in mind. “You have to mix the right concepts and be consistent. We gave the utmost care to that.”
Last Samurai Standing continues to rise in global popularity, with critics crediting Okada’s action direction as one of the series’ strongest elements.
