Mazari,Hadi Challenge IHC Ruling on Security Breach Case

News Desk

ISLAMABAD: Incarcerated human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha, have approached the Supreme Court to contest the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) recent ruling that declined to stay their trial in a high-profile security breach case.

The couple, who were indicted on October 7, face serious allegations related to the disruption of a security route for an international cricket team and incitement of public unrest.

The IHC’s decision on October 19 addressed appeals from Mazari and Chattha against an earlier order from the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) that dismissed their petitions challenging the framing of charges and the inclusion of terrorism-related provisions.

The couple’s legal team argues that the charges are politically motivated and infringe upon their rights as citizens and legal practitioners.

This case has significant implications for the legal landscape in Pakistan, particularly concerning the treatment of human rights advocates and the judiciary’s role in political matters.

Observers note that the outcome could set a precedent for future cases involving political dissent and the use of anti-terrorism laws against activists.

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear the case, legal experts and human rights organizations are closely monitoring developments.

The next hearing is expected to shed light on the judiciary’s stance regarding the balance between national security and individual rights.
