Winter Storm Puts 60 Million Americans at Risk

Washington: Millions of Americans are bracing for dangerous winter weather as a powerful storm moves across the eastern United States, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, strong winds and a sharp Arctic temperature drop.

More than 60 million people are in the storm’s path, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning that conditions could remain hazardous through Monday. Winter storm warnings stretch across an unusually wide area, from western Kansas to parts of the Mid-Atlantic, covering roughly 1,500 miles.

The most severe snowfall is expected across parts of northeastern Kansas and north-central Missouri, where forecasters say accumulations could reach levels not seen in a decade. Heavy lake-effect snow is also forecast around parts of New York and Pennsylvania, with some areas potentially receiving several feet.

The storm has already disrupted air travel. Kansas City International Airport temporarily suspended flight operations after rapid ice accumulation affected the airfield before operations later resumed following runway treatment.

Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate further as blizzard conditions develop across the Central Plains. The NWS warned that whiteout conditions could make roads impassable and leave motorists stranded.

Washington could receive at least five inches of snow, with higher totals possible in surrounding areas. Meanwhile, a sharp southward shift of the jet stream is expected to send temperatures plunging well below seasonal averages, with some areas experiencing temperatures below zero Fahrenheit.

Freezing rain and sleet stretching from Kansas toward Kentucky and Virginia are also raising concerns over widespread ice accumulation. Forecasters warn that heavy ice could damage trees and power lines, potentially triggering prolonged outages during the subsequent deep freeze.

The Appalachian region faces particular risks as some communities continue recovering from severe damage caused by a hurricane in September.

Officials in Kentucky, Missouri and Virginia have declared states of emergency and urged residents to prepare for dangerous roads, power outages and rapidly falling temperatures.

The NWS has warned that the combination of heavy snow, ice, high winds and extreme cold could create dangerous conditions across a large portion of the country, with the storm expected to continue affecting the eastern US through Monday.
