Rain Forecast, But Karachi Remains Vulnerable to Flooding

News Desk

Karachi: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted light rain and drizzle for Karachi in the next 24 hours, but authorities remain on high alert as warnings of possible urban flooding loom over the city.

According to the Met Office, the port city will experience partly cloudy and humid conditions, with chances of drizzle or light showers in the morning and at night.

Temperatures are expected to range between 31°C and 33°C, with humidity at 78 percent and sea breezes blowing at 15 kilometres per hour.

While the forecast appears mild, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has cautioned that heavy rainfall between August 30 and September 2 could once again inundate Karachi’s low-lying areas.

The warning also extends to Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, and Tharparkar, while Hyderabad, Dadu, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Kashmore may face heavy downpours from August 30 to September 1.

Earlier this month, a sudden spell of rain paralyzed Karachi, causing severe power outages, urban flooding, and tragic accidents that claimed 10 lives.

The city, with its fragile drainage system and poor urban planning, remains vulnerable to even short bursts of rainfall.

Meanwhile, in Balochistan, most districts witnessed clear skies and dry conditions, although the PMD forecast possible rain in Zhob and Musakhel.

The province’s coastal belt is likely to remain partly cloudy with humid weather prevailing elsewhere.

As Pakistan endures one of its deadliest monsoon seasons in recent years — with more than 800 lives lost nationwide since June — Karachi residents are bracing for the possibility of fresh disruption, underscoring the urgent need for long-term climate resilience in the country’s largest city.
