Lahore: Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari has called for a shift in lifestyle to help mitigate the impact of smog, which has been affecting several cities in Punjab.

In a statement on Friday, she expressed concern over rising smog levels in Multan and Faisalabad, describing it as a critical issue that required both public cooperation and strong regulatory action.

Highlighting the government’s efforts, she said, “Faisalabad remains an industrial hub, but our administration is actively working to address this. Hundreds of kilns have been demolished in the last eight months, and we’re moving to adopt zigzag technology for those that remain. Those unwilling to switch to this eco-friendly technology will not be allowed to operate in Punjab.”

The minister pointed out that smog was not unique to Pakistan, noting that countries like China have been battling it for decades.

She added, “Beijing has been relocating its industries to combat smog, and we are also exploring similar measures.”

She further emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, urging India to step up its smog-reduction efforts. “Both sides of the border need to act swiftly to protect lives,” Bukhari said.

The minister suggested that industries be established away from densely populated areas to limit health impacts on citizens.

She also shared that the Chief Minister of Punjab had recently suffered from health complications exacerbated by the worsening air quality.
