Lemon Water Helps Hydration, Digestion and Heart Health: Expert

News Desk

Islamabad: Lemon-infused water, whether taken warm or cold, offers multiple health benefits ranging from hydration to heart health, according to Dr Mohamed Afifi, consultant in therapeutic nutrition.

Speaking about its advantages, he noted that lemon water is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, which strengthen the immune system and help the body fight infections and viruses. It also supports collagen production vital for skin health, aids digestion, and prevents bloating.

Dr Afifi recommended drinking lemon water on an empty stomach early in the morning, as it helps flush out toxins. “Regular consumption can improve hydration, support metabolism, and even reduce appetite—contributing to fat loss over time,” he added.

Health benefits highlighted

Scientific studies suggest that lemon water can help prevent kidney stones due to its citric acid content. The drink also plays a role in slowing skin ageing, reducing wrinkles, and managing acne.

Experts further link lemon water to cardiovascular benefits, as its potassium content helps lower blood pressure, reduce arterial stiffness, and protect against heart disease. It may also promote relaxation and reduce stress by supporting the nervous system.

Caution for some patients

However, Dr. Afifi advised caution for those with acid reflux or gastritis, warning that the citrus content of lemon can aggravate existing stomach problems.

“While lemon water is a healthy option for most people, individuals with digestive issues should consult a doctor before making it part of their daily routine,” he said.
