Islamabad: After a 25-year hiatus, the skies of Lahore are set to come alive once again with the vibrant swirl of kites, marking the much-anticipated revival of the city’s iconic Basant festival.

Preparations are in full swing, promising a safe, colorful, and joyous celebration that locals and international enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting.

Muhammad Aqeel Malik, Patron-in-Chief of the All-Pakistan Kite Flying Association (APKFA), shared the excitement on Monday, noting that this year’s festival will not only restore a beloved cultural tradition but also symbolize unity and harmony.

“Lahore is welcoming back its lost culture with open arms. This Basant is about celebration, not controversy,” Malik told a local news channel.

In preparation, organizers and authorities have implemented strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure public safety. Free intinas (kite-flying rods with motorbike stickers) are being distributed to participants, while all kite manufacturers and sellers are required to register, creating a regulated and secure market for festival materials.

A highlight this year is the influx of kites from across Pakistan, reflecting an unprecedented demand. Malik explained that the surge in kite and kite-string prices is a result of high demand rather than government intervention. “Human lives remain our top priority, and safety measures are in place at every level,” he added.

Adding to the festival’s charm, Malik confirmed that the event will remain free of political figures or controversial symbols, keeping the focus purely on the spirit of celebration and community.

With anticipation building, Lahore is poised to see its streets and rooftops come alive with dazzling colors and patterns as locals and visitors alike compete in friendly kite battles. The air will hum with excitement, laughter, and the music of snapping strings—a vivid reminder of a cherished tradition returning home.

As Malik concluded, “Despite the challenges, our aim is simple: a safe, joyful, and unforgettable Basant for everyone. The city’s skies are ready to dance with kites once again.”
