KP Pushes for Koh-e-Suleman’s Protected Status

Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has formally approached the federal government to declare the entire Koh-e-Suleman mountain range as a wildlife conservancy.
On the directives of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, the KP Forest and Wildlife Department has sent an official request to the Ministry of Environmental Coordination, stressing the need for inter-provincial collaboration between Punjab, Balochistan, and KP to safeguard the region’s unique biodiversity.
The letter highlights the ecological significance of Koh-e-Suleman, home to rare and endangered flora and fauna. It underscores that preserving this biodiversity will not only enhance the region’s global recognition but also contribute to mitigating the adverse effects of climate change while ensuring the well-being of local communities.
The KP government has already implemented several conservation initiatives within its territorial jurisdiction of Koh-e-Suleman. However, given that the mountain range extends into Balochistan and Punjab, a unified strategy involving all three provinces is essential for the effective protection of its rare wildlife and plant species.
The letter further emphasizes that KP’s conservation efforts would be more impactful if Punjab and Balochistan adopt similar measures. To achieve this, the KP government has urged the federal government to engage with the provincial administrations of Punjab and Balochistan to declare the Koh-e-Suleman range as a transboundary wildlife conservancy.
Such an initiative would ensure coordinated and effective management of the region’s wildlife and natural habitats across all three provinces.
